Hawks' Crawford wins Sixth Man AwardBasketball Betting Lines04/27/2010 - New York, NY (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Atlanta Hawks guard Jamal Crawford has been selected as the NBA's Sixth Man of the Year. Crawford received 580 of a possible 610 points, including 110 first-place votes, from a panel of 122 sportswriters and broadcasters. Last year's winner, Jason Terry of Dallas, finished second in the balloting with 220 points, followed by Cleveland's Anderson Varejao with 126 points. In order to be eligible for this award, a player must have come off the bench in more games than he started. Crawford did not start any of the 79 games he played this season. Crawford averaged 18.0 points with 3.0 assists and 2.5 rebounds in 31.1 minutes this season. He was Atlanta's second-leading scorer, behind only Joe Johnson. Over the last 40 years, only Ricky Pierce posted a higher scoring average without starting a game. Pierce averaged 23.0 points in 1989-90 in winning the Sixth Man honor with Milwaukee. Crawford became the first Atlanta player to win the award, which was first presented in 1982-83.

A shocker: Within days the Pats announced they'd be sponsoring the Massachusetts state lottery, the Skins said they'd slap their sticker on Virginia scratch-offs and the Ravens admitted they were talking to Maryland lottery bosses. In all likelihood, it won't be long before every team is a presenting sponsor of scratch-offs or just plain old pick fives. "The change in policy was approved 32-0," said NFL spokesman Greg Aiello. "So you can expect to see more deals soon." It's a branding opportunity too big for the owners to ignore, and one a couple of dozen baseball franchises have enjoyed for years. The fact the NFL has been slower to act than those slack-brained Seligites is indicative of its complicated relationship with all forms of gambling. Consider this: Last Thursday, as the Pats and the Redskins finalized their new lottery deals, a lawyer representing the NFL argued before Delaware's Supreme Court that the state's newly signed sports betting law should be repealed. Here's where I should rip him. But, the thing is, he's right. Not to get Obama on you, but this is a complicated, nuanced issue. As much as lotteries are considered a tax on the poor, the NFL isn't a socially obligated government program -- it's just a business. Scratch-off's help the bottom line, sports betting doesn't. Detroit Lions (+1500) - The Lions are probably once again going to be the whipping boys for the rest of the teams in the NFC North, but they aren't just going to roll over and die once again. There is some real talent amassing on this team offensively, as the combination of QB Matt Stafford, RB Jahvid Best, WR Calvin Johnson, and TE Brandon Pettigrew should put a bunch of points on the board if the offensive line can even remotely hold up. The questions really lie on defense, where it feels like DT Ndamukong Suh is going to be trying to stop opposing teams all by himself. This year should show some marked improvement in the Motor City.
