Floyd headed to UTEP

03/30/2010 - El Paso, TX (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Tim Floyd is reportedly the choice to replace Tony Barbee as the men's basketball coach at UTEP.

The El Paso Times has reported that Floyd will be introduced at a news conference on Tuesday.

Floyd, a former UTEP assistant under Don Haskins, is currently an assistant with the NBA's New Orleans Hornets after spending the previous four seasons as head coach at Southern California. He abruptly resigned at USC last June amid allegations of recruiting violations of O.J. Mayo.

An internal investigation by USC led to self-imposed sanctions of a postseason ban for the 2009-10 campaign. Mayo played for the Trojans during the 2007-08 season before leaving for the NBA.

Floyd posted a record of 85-50 with the Trojans, guiding the school to three straight NCAA Tournament appearances. USC reached the Sweet 16 of the 2007 tournament.

As an assistant at UTEP from 1978-86, Floyd helped the Miners to three straight NCAA Tournament appearances from 1984-86. He then went on to his first head coaching job with Idaho.

After two seasons with Idaho, Floyd spent six years at New Orleans and four seasons at Iowa State. He has a collegiate coaching record of 328-180 with eight NCAA Tournament appearances.

Before rejoining the college ranks with USC, Floyd tried his hand in the NBA with Chicago and New Orleans. He was the coach of the Bulls after Michael Jordan left and was fired 25 games into his fourth season, then led the Hornets to the playoffs in his lone season with New Orleans.

The Miners needed to fill the vacancy created when Barbee left for Auburn last week.
