Seven-run third inning propels Rays to win over O's

Baseball Betting Lines

07/19/2010 - Baltimore, MD (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Wade Davis threw eight strong innings and was backed by a seven-run third inning, as the Tampa Bay Rays crushed the Baltimore Orioles, 8-1, in the opener of a three-game series at Camden Yards.

Davis (7-9) held the Orioles to one run on seven hits and one walk to get the victory for a second consecutive start. His eight innings pitched are a season high.

Jason Bartlett had a two-run single in the third inning and finished 2-for-3 for Tampa Bay, which was coming off a series loss to the Yankees in the Bronx. Evan Longoria went 3-for-5 with an RBI.

Orioles starter Chris Tillman (1-4) didn't make it through three full innings and was the victim of the Rays' outburst. He was responsible for giving up all eight Rays runs, allowing seven hits and walking four while recording just eight outs.

Cesar Izturis went 2-for-2 and drove in the lone run for the Orioles, who were swept in three games by Toronto over the weekend. Baltimore scored just five runs in that series.

Ben Zobrist put the Rays ahead with an RBI ground-rule double in the second, and Tampa Bay blew the game open in the third. Longoria led off with a single, Tillman hit Carlos Pena with a pitch, and Matt Joyce lined a double to right to plate the inning's first run.

John Jaso worked a walk to load the bases, with still nobody out, prompting a coaching visit to the mound. But Tillman continued to struggle, walking B.J. Upton to force in a run. Bartlett followed with a single to center to bring in two and leave runners on the corners for Sean Rodriguez, whose sacrifice bunt brought Upton home.

Tillman retired Zobrist to set up a possible escape from the inning, but Carl Crawford tripled, bringing Bartlett in from second base. That was it for Tillman, who was replaced by Matt Albers. Longoria returned to the plate for a second time and singled in Crawford to make it an 8-0 game before Albers struck out Pena.

Albers pitched 3 1/3 innings of scoreless relief, but the massive inning was all the Rays needed, and there was little scoring for the rest of the game. Izturis put the Orioles on the scoreboard with an RBI single in the fifth.

Brandon Roy Favorite to Win 2007 NBA Rookie of the Year

Portland TrailBlazer’s guard, Brandon Roy, is MySportsbook.com’s overwhelming favorite to win the NBA Rookie of the Year odds.

Despite missing 20 games due to an injury earlier this season, Roy has definitely put up the best numbers of his 1st year peers. In 32 games, Roy is averaging 15.3 PPG, 4.2 boards and 3.5 assists in over 33 minutes of play per game. While most rookies breakdown as the season progresses (see Morrison), Roy is only getting stronger as his playing time and scoring average has increased each month.

With 30 or so games left in the regular season, Roy isn’t a lock for the award by any means. Other rookies are putting together some pretty impressive campaigns and a few could give Roy a run for the award with increased playing time. Heading the list is first pick, Andrea Bargnani of the Toronto Raptors. Even though he has started only two games all season, Bargnani is averaging 10.3 PPPG while shooting 35% from deep.

Randy Foye of the Minnesota Timberwolves could be set to give Roy the best competition NBA Rookie of the Year betting lines. With the benching of Mike James, Foye looks like he could be the starter in the T-Wolves backcourt for the rest of the season. So far, Foye has averaged 9 PPG and 2.4 assists in just under 21 minutes per game. With his new role of starter, Foye’s numbers will definitely increase. In his first game as the new starting guard this past Sunday, Foye had 10 points; five rebounds and 8 assists. More importantly, he logged 34 minutes of playing time; his third highest run of the season.

Adam Morrison, of the Charlotte Bobcats, was the favorite early on in the season after averaging 15+ PPG through the first month of the season. Ever since his torrid start, Morrison’s point production has declined each month. This really isn’t surprising, considering at 6’8” he only weighs 205 lbs. Obviously he will need to hit the weights big time during the off-season in order to keep from breaking down in the future.
