Baseball Betting Lines

05/24/2010 - New York, NY (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Nelson Cruz of the Texas Rangers has been selected as the American League Player of the Week for the period ending May 23.

The 29-year-old outfielder hit safely in all seven games last week, posting a .458 average (11-for-24), while belting two home runs, driving in an AL-best 12 runs and scoring five times to win the award for the first time in his career.

Cruz had the game-winning RBI in the Rangers' victory over the Orioles on May 19, collected a career-high four hits, including a three-home run, in a 13-7 win over Baltimore the next day and then drove in the winning run against the Cubs the following night in the opener of a three-game interleague series.

Cruz is currently third among American League outfielders in the first round of All-Star balloting released Monday.

Others considered for this week's honor included Toronto third baseman Edwin Encarnacion, who belted a major league-best six home runs, Tampa Bay second baseman Ben Zobrist, who led the AL with a .500 batting average, and Oakland left-hander Gio Gonzalez, who recorded two wins and posted a 1.80 earned run average in 15 innings.
