Blackhawks hope to stay hot at home against Preds

12/04/2009 - (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - With a chunk of its young foundation locked up for the foreseeable future, the Blackhawks can now solely concentrate on winning a Stanley Cup championship.

One day after inking three of its talented skaters to new contracts, Central Division-leading Chicago plays host to the Nashville Predators this evening at United Center, where it has won eight straight.

Captain Jonathan Toews, former Calder Trophy winner Patrick Kane and defenseman Duncan Keith will all take the ice tonight after officially agreeing to new deals. Toews and Kane, both 21, received five-year extensions, reportedly worth an identical $31.5 million, while the 26-year-old Keith got a 13-year extension. His new deal is worth a reported $72 million.

All three have been key to Chicago's recent success. The Blackhawks ended a five-year playoff drought last year by reaching the Western Conference finals, where they were ousted by Detroit, and they currently hold a five-point edge over second-place Nashville in the standings.

The 'Hawks hope their newly-signed trio can lead them to their first division title since they captured the Norris division in 1992-93, and their first championship since 1961.

"Today is another great day in our franchise's decorated history," Blackhawks general manager Stan Bowman said in a press release on Thursday. "We've said all along that the plan was to keep our core together for a long time and Jonathan, Duncan and Patrick are a major part of that. This is a large step toward setting the Blackhawks up for long-term success as an organization."

Kane has nine goals and 26 points through 26 games this year, Toews has notched six goals, 10 assists and a team-high plus-11 rating in 20 contests and Keith has a team-high 18 assists to go along with 23 points.

Toews was one of three goal scorers along with Patrick Sharp and Kris Versteeg in Tuesday's 4-3 shootout victory over Columbus. Chicago finally won it in the 11th round of the final frame when Brent Seabrook lifted a shot past Blue Jackets netminder Steve Mason.

"He's a go-to guy, a weapon in the shootout now," said head coach Joel Quenneville, who became the 14th coach in league history to reach 500 wins. "The defense were calling for him. He had a lot of support at that end to be up next. There were nine times we could have won the game, so we're glad it's over."

Marian Hossa, signed to a 12-year deal this past offseason, added two assists in his home debut, Cristobal Huet made 20 saves and Chicago, coming off a 4-1-1 road trip, won for the ninth time in its last 11 games.

Chicago also extended its home winning streak to eight games and is 11-2-1 as the host this season.

Nashville, meanwhile, has lost three of four since a seven-game winning streak. In Wednesday's 5-4 overtime loss to Minnesota, Predators goaltender Pekka Rinne made two saves during a flurry of action before the Wild's Andrew Ebbett scored 1:26 into overtime on a rebound.

Rinne made 22 saves, Jason Arnott had a two goals and an assist and Steve Sullivan notched a goal and three helpers for his first four-point game since February 18, 2006. Sullivan has four goals and 11 points over his last 10 games after totaling just five points in his first 17 contests.

Nashville fell to 6-5-2 on the road this year.

The Predators lost their first two meetings with the Blackhawks this year before notching a 2-0 home win on October 29. Chicago has won five of the last seven meetings in the series, and has also won three straight and six of the previous seven played at United Center.

It is called the "pointspread."

Many years ago, NFL games, as well as the more popular college games, used straight odds as a vehicle for betting. For example, if the Bears were playing the Giants, and it shaped up as a competitive contest, the Bears might be, say, a 7/5 favorite. If they were playing an also-ran, it might be 10/1. Well, there is a point where a line becomes prohibitive, as far as betting the favorite. And who would waste money betting an underdog that has virtually no chance? But in modern sports betting, a "pointspread" is used.

A NFL pointspreads are exactly that, a pre-established point difference between the two sides that will, for all intents and purposes, create a handicap that evens things out, and in doing so, produces comparable wagering activity on both sides of that proposition. So in lieu of a odds figure in which to bet the team to win outright, the Bears might be a three-point favorite over the New York Giants, and a 17-point favorite over the also-ran. Now that the team that is the underdog can "get" points, there can be equal action on both sides.

In sportsbooks, this is usually done with efficiency by charging the losing bettors 10% extra - in effect, bettors are laying 11/10 on those games. So they are actually betting $110 to win $100. If they lose, they pay the "vig." If they win, they simply collect.
