Blackhawks celebrate Stanley Cup title

06/11/2010 -
Chicago, IL (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - The Chicago Blackhawks celebrated their Stanley
Cup title with a parade and rally on Friday.
Two days after the Blackhawks won the NHL championship with a Game 6 victory
over Philadelphia, fans lined the streets of Chicago and cheered their heroes
as they rode down Washington Street and Michigan Avenue in the open tops of
double-decker buses.
The parade came on the day when Chicago would have hosted a Game 7 in the
Stanley Cup Finals, but Patrick Kane's overtime winner in Philadelphia on
Wednesday instead ended a 49-year championship drought and prompted a party in
the city.
A video tribute highlighting Chicago's triumphant run preceded speeches by
members of the Blackhawks organization.
"We said we would not rest until we brought a Stanley Cup home to you," said
Blackhawks owner Rocky Wirtz from the podium to start the rally. "With respect
to the Stanley Cup, it's home, and it's the place we want it to stay,"
Blackhawks greats of the past, including Tony Esposito, Stan Mikita and Bobby
Hull, were also introduced to the crowd before the coaching staff, including
head coach Joel Quenneville, was welcomed with a loud ovation.
"We should all enjoy this," Quenneville said. "The Cup's here and it should
stay a little longer."
Blackhawks players were then introduced, with the loudest cheers going to Kane
and captain Jonathan Toews.
"This is unbelievable," said Kane. "This is the best experience I've ever been
through."
Toews, the Conn Smythe winner as playoff MVP, carried the Stanley Cup over his
head as he was introduced to cheers of "MVP, MVP" from the crowd.
"We have the best fans in the world, you guys are absolutely amazing," Toews
said. "You made this special for us. We have an amazing group of guys. We
worked hard and wanted to do it for each other, but most importantly we wanted
do it for you fans, you're the greatest."
Once Toews finished his brief speech, confetti reigned down on the stage as
the Blackhawks' victory theme echoed through the frenzied throng.
The parade was the first to celebrate one of Chicago's sports teams since 2005
when the White Sox won the World Series.
